ionysis achieves key milestone with first electrolysis proof-of-concept projects on new coating line

Mar 17, 2025

ionysis has successfully commissioned its state-of-the-art pilot coating line for catalyst-coated membranes, marking a major step forward in electrolyzer and fuel cell production. The accomplishment of first successful proof-of-concept (PoC) electrolysis projects with major industry customers demonstrate the versatility and readiness of the new pilot line for larger scale pilot production.

ionysis GmbH is proud to announce the successful commissioning of its new roll-to-roll coating line for the pilot production of catalyst coated membranes (CCMs) for electrolyzers and fuel cells. Located in an ISO class 5 clean room, the facility meets the highest industry standards required by automotive OEMs and major industrial clients. This advanced and versatile coating line enables ionysis to produce CCMs at a maximum width of 450 mm, to be ready even for larger electrolyzer formats.

Dr. Matthias Breitwieser, CTO and co-founder of ionysis, stated, "The commissioning of our new pilot coating line marks a significant milestone for ionysis towards the industrialization of our technology. This new pilot line allows us to scale up both dimensions and production volumes significantly, enabling us to support pilot projects up to the multi megawatt (MW) scale.”

With the new line in operation, ionysis has successfully completed first production proof-of-concept projects on the coating line with major industry partners proving its versatility and readiness. Lisa Langer, CFO and co-founder of ionysis, commented, "We are thrilled by the successful completion of these very important electrolysis projects. Successfully completing these PoC projects is a crucial step toward securing higher-volume orders and transitioning to full-scale production.”

ionysis has the capacity to produce up to 10,000 m² of CCMs per year by the end of 2025 and is actively engaging with industry partners to leverage this capability. This expansion aligns with the growing demand for high-performance CCMs in the electrolyzer and fuel cell markets.

About ionysis

ionysis GmbH develops highly efficient, emission-free and sustainable core components for fuel cells and electrolyzers. This includes the so-called "membrane electrode assemblies" with a significantly reduced content of perfluorinated substances. The aim is to further develop novel, more performant and environmentally friendly membrane electrode assemblies and to demonstrate their technical feasibility on a large scale.  ionysis began operations in September 2022, and by end of 2024, it has grown to a team of 26 people. The foundation for this spin-off from Hahn-Schickard and the University of Freiburg was established through several publicly funded research projects. The company secured seed financing by two strategic partners. The ISO 9001 certification was issued by DEKRA.
